Eddie Hearn has revealed that he’s now held fresh talks with Billy Joe Saunders about a potential boxing return this year.
The 34-year-old former middleweight and super-middleweight world champion has not fought since suffering the first defeat of his career to Canelo Alvarez in May 2021.
Despite teasing a possible return on several occasions since, Saunders has been out of the ring for over two years.
He is now back in the gym though and beginning to try and get back in fighting shape.
Hearn told iFL TV following fresh talks: “I liked what I heard from Billy.
“The reality about Billy Joe Saunders is he’s been a pain in the a*** to me at times, I also feel like we’ve done a great job for him, I think he respects that.
“I think he wants to be with us and I would like to promote him.
“When I sit down with him I realise what an asset he can be to British boxing when he’s not misbehaving.”
Hearn continued: “I think he may return in December.
“I think a fight up at 175lbs (light-heavyweight) could be an option, and then down to 168lbs (super-middleweight) for a big fight in the Spring, and that’s what we discussed.”
If he can get back down to super-middleweight, then a potential fight against the winner of the Liam Smith vs Chris Eubank Jr middleweight rematch, live on talkSPORT this weekend, could be an option.
This would be especially intriguing if Eubank Jr can upset the odds and emerge victorious on Saturday night, given Saunders’ history with him stemming from their first fight in 2014.
However, not all fans are convinced.
Many have pointed out that Saunders looks a long way away from fighting shape in recent pictures.
One fan mockingly commented: “Bridgerweight (224lbs) ain’t ready.”
While another said: “Heavyweight vs Andy Ruiz.”
A a third added: “Start the diet now.”
Saunders will be looking to prove these boxing fans wrong in the near future.
