Lazio blame Manchester United for failed Mason Greenwood transfer as Getafe loan details emerge

Manchester United have been slammed by Lazio president Claudio Lotito over their role in the club’s failure to sign Mason Greenwood.

The Serie A outfit were eyeing up the 21-year-old forward on deadline day, only for Spanish club Getafe to secure a loan deal instead.

talkSPORT understands that Lazio were the one-cap England international’s most likeliest destination on Friday.

However, an agreement couldn’t be reached between Maurizio Sarri’s side and the Red Devils before the 7pm cut-off time in Italy,

But it wasn’t for Lazio’s lack of trying, with Lotito blaming United for the club failing to bring Greenwood to Rome.

He has declared that United chiefs delayed processing the required documents, while stressing Greenwood was keen on a switch.

Speaking to La Lazio Siamo Noi following the closure of Italy’s transfer window, Lotito said: “I tried until the last minute.

“They didn’t countersign in time. He wanted to come to Lazio.”

He added: “Can we try again in January? Let’s see.”

But unfortunately for Lazio, Getafe, who were one of a number of clubs offered Greenwood, swooped in to sign him.

And United allowed Greenwood to leave without demanding a loan fee to help speed up negotiations.

It is understood that United will also continue to pay a significant percentage of his wages during his time in Madrid.

Greenwood hasn’t played for United since January 2022 after he was arrested on suspicion of rape, assault and making threats to kill.

Erik ten Hag’s side subsequently launched their own internal investigation after the CPS dropped all charges against him in February 2023.

United then announced last month that the player has no future at the club.

He will have one year left on his contract at Old Trafford once he returns from his loan spell at Getafe, though it is believed Greenwood will not pull on their famous red shirt again.
